This picture pretty 527-acre cattle farm features a circa 1980 manor house on high ground at its center enjoying a panoramic view of its fairly level, fertile farmland, six-acre lake and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. Quiet and private, it lies in an area of prosperous working farms.
The manor house is distinguished by crown and chair moldings, pegged random width hardwood floors, fireplaces, built in corner cabinets, two master suites and two more bedrooms. The land, mostly cropland and pasture, and dependencies now support 180 cow-calf units. There are scattered mature trees and numerous creeks flowing through the property, easily sufficient to support larger, additional lakes. Annual taxes are exceptionally low: $3,500.
Four miles east lies Appomattox Courthouse, where Lee met Grant to end the Civil War. Other nearby tourist attractions include Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, now under a major restoration, and the National D-Day Memorial at Bedford.
Twelve miles to the west via four-lane divided highway US 460 lies the thriving city of Lynchburg on the James River. Lynchburg boasts several major institutions of higher learning, such as Liberty University, Lynchburg College, Randolph College, a major industrial presence, and a population of 245,000 in its Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Digital Cities Annual Survey rates Lynchburg in the top ten US cities for its size in its emphasis on information technology. Many fine old homes and public buildings of various styles, Federal, Italianate, Neo-Classical, Romanesque, Queen Anne, Jeffersonian, and even Art Deco were built in the area in the 19th and early 20th centuries, then fell into disrepair, but many, and the whole historic downtown, are now enjoying a major restoration.
